Chinese Ceramics, a predominant section of Chinese culture, has been widely recognized and admired across the world. According to world archeology, Chinese ceramics have been discovered in various regions and countries, with Europe once viewing them as precious rarities. In fact, they were often used as a measure of one's social status and family background. The infatuation with Chinese ceramics in France led to extensive collections and displays by both aristocrats and government officials.
The history of Chinese ceramics dates back over ten thousand years. During the Neolithic Yangshao culture, colorful earthenware and red or white-bodied ware were crafted, later followed by a flourishing production of black ware in the Longshan culture. The Shang dynasty introduced ash-glazed ware, or proto-celadon, and the Spring and Autumn period saw the development of hard-bodied, high-fired pottery with intricate decorations and ash-glazed ware. Gray ware with or without color decoration became prominent in the Warring States period, with the terracotta warriors from Emperor Qin Shihuangdi's tomb as a notable example.
During the Eastern Han dynasty, low-fired lead-glazed ware, primarily used for funerary objects, emerged, while genuine celadon production began at the Yue kiln in northern Zhejiang Province. The Northern and Southern Dynasties saw the refinement of celadon and lead-glazed ware, with distinctive forms evolving. Chinese ceramics became renowned along the Silk Road, a crucial channel for cultural and commercial exchange with foreign countries. In the Middle Ages, China earned the title of Ceramic Kingdom as Chinese ceramics gained popularity worldwide.
From the late 8th century, Chinese ceramics began overseas trade, showcasing products like Three-Color Ceramics, White Ceramics, and Green Ceramics. The Oceanic Silk Road played a significant role in transporting ceramics via seaways from cities like Yangzhou, Ningbo, Quanzhou, and Guangzhou. Zheng He's historic Occidental Trip further facilitated the global spread of Chinese ceramics.
